Welcome to Room 12, 2011

I'm looking forward to another exciting year at Kenakena in the Kahikatea Syndicate.

Please contact me via my email if you have any queries:  tdowner@kenakena.school.nz

This will be the place to come for extra copies of the syndicate newsletters, homework sheets, success criteria for homework tasks.  I have left slideshows etc of our activities last year and beyond for new children to see as an example of some of the work, trips etc we have done in the syndicate.

Inventors Topic - Term 2 2011

We have been looking at characteristics of an Inventor, using John Britten as an example.  This topic will lead into a music focus with children exploring properties of sound in musical instruments.  We will then use characteristics of an inventor and the design process to develop a musical instrument.

I am adding the links to the John Britten video clip we have looked at in class and an interactive 'Musical Sounds' website for children to explore.

Student Voice Topic, Term 4 2010

The class was very keen to do a Music topic on Air Bands.  We looked at video clips of various musicians performing different genre of music and discussed characteristics of each performance.  We paid special attention to how the band members moved during their performance, how they used the space, what "moves" they had, what instuments they used and how they entertained the audience.

Students then selected their groups and decided on a song they wished to perform.  After nearly two weeks of rehearsing they were ready to perform their song to an appreciative audience.

Here is a selection of photos that unfortunately don't do the performers justice.  The energy and  dance moves had to be seen to be believed!

ANZAC Day Topic:

We had a great, although rather chilly,  trip into Wellington to visit the National War Memorial's Hall of Rememberance and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. We learnt about New Zealand's involvement in WW I and WW II and other conflicts around the world NZ has played a role in. It was a very peaceful, special place to visit where people go to honour those that died defending NZ.

We also visited the Ataturk Memorial which is a replica of the memorial in Gallipoli at ANZAC Cove.  The site at Moa Point was chosen because it is very similar to the place where the ANZAC soldiers landed in Gallipoli in 1915.

Here are a few photos of our day.

We have just finished some fantastic portraits based on the work of a late-century European artist called Amendeo Modigliani.  Enjoy!

                 Useful Websites

A good all round website.  You can do Year 5 to get easier problems and year 7 for more extension.  (Year 6 should be okay to hardish for most children)
